Devonport Auckland Guided Audio Tour

Devonport_from_mt_victoria

Discover the harbour side village of Devonport with an audio tour, a spectacular 10 minute ferry ride across Auckland's sparkling Waitemata Harbour.

One of the earliest settled parts of Auckland, Devonport today is home to some great cafes, art galleries, weekend markets and during the summer months concerts on the green fronting the harbour.

There is plenty to keep you engaged after a walking tour exploring the heart of Auckland City in a relaxing atmosphere.  If history is of interest it is also home to the Royal New Zealand Navy and the family-friendly Navy Museum as well as an excellent local history museum.

You can not help but notice Mt Victoria towering above the suburb or equally impressive North Head. Both were volcanic cones and offer spectacular views from the top of Auckland City, Waitemata Harbour, Rangitoto, the perfectly symmetrical tree covered volcanic island in the Hauraki Gulf. Both of these hills were once home to Maori pa, traditional fortified Maori hill forts, and still have gun emplacements and other war time military earth works or bunkers that are safe and interesting to explore.

So when you are visiting Auckland, take a trip to Devonport, Auckland's maritime village for a spectacular day out.

Explore New Zealand Museums

Media_httpwwwnzmuseum_bveev

I came across the New Zealand Museums site and thought how wonderful to have a searchable database by district with links to all, or most museums in New Zealand.

There are many wonderful museums in New Zealand which are well worth visiting if you have the opportunity, some are only open on very, limited hours and others are open most days such as the one featured in my free audio guide to Dargaville Regional Museum which is a great regional museum on northern New Zealand's west coast on the way to the famous kauri forests of Waipoua.

The NZ Museums site is a great resource for planning a trip or researching family stories for family history with links to collections and a host of other resources.

There is a fantastic free exhibition on at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra Exploration and Endeavour: The Royal Society of London and the South Seas from 15 September 2010 to 30 January 2011

It commemorates the 350th anniversary of the Royal Society, the world's oldest scientific academy in continuous existence. The exhibition brings together unique treasures associated with voyages of scientific discovery to the South Seas in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Some of the original items and letters it has is truly remarkable many to do with the Society's expedition of Cptn James Cook to observe the transit of Venus in the South Pacific in 1769.

The exhibition also has the meteorological records journal of lieutenant William Davis from the earliest days of Sydney as a penal colony.  It details the date, wind, weather, temperature and barometric readings of the early colony from 1788-91

When you are visiting Sydney you can take an audio tour of The Rocks Sydney which helps bring alive the life and times of the earliest part of Sydney and will guide you through some of the remarkable built history still remaining whilst telling stories that help the earliest history of Sydney come alive.

There are a few cruise ships around the world that appear to be "unlicky" I think it pays do do your research and avoid these unlucky ones. Time and time again the same ships feature in "unfotunate incidents", well fortunately for us we can vote with our dollars not to book on them.
